چکیده

w L r w h c w h i a i d m t n ( e S t s u ( t r p r Individual kernels of wheat containing immature ice weevils, Sitophilus oryzae (L.) (Coleoptera: Curcuionidae), parasitized by Anisopteromalus calandrae Howard) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) could be sepaated from uninfested kernels and kernels that conained unparasitized weevils by using near-infrared NIR) spectroscopy. Wheat kernels from cultures of the arasitoid were X-rayed and sorted into uninfested ernels, kernels infested with weevil larvae or pupae, ernels containing parasitoid larvae feeding on host eevils, and kernels containing parasitoid pupae and emains of the host. Kernels were automatically posiioned and scanned (400–1700 nm) with the NIR sysem. Kernels containing parasitoid pupae were comletely differentiated from kernels containing weevil upae as well as all other kernels in this automated ystem. With the appropriate integration of NIR specroscopy and seed-sorting instrumentation, kernels ontaining parasitoid pupae could be automatically ollected from cultures of A. calandrae during the ass rearing of this beneficial insect.

Automated Detection of Single Wheat Kernels Containing Live or Dead Insects Using Near–infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy

An automated near–infrared (NIR) reflectance system was used over a two–month storage period to detect single wheat kernels that contained live or dead internal rice weevils at various stages of growth. Correct classification of sound kernels plus kernels containing live pupae, large larvae, medium–sized larvae, and small larvae averaged 94%, 93%, 84%, and 63%, respectively. Pupae + large larva...

Efficacy of diatomaceous earth to control internal infestations of rice weevil and maize weevil (Coleoptera: Curculionidae).

Densities of 10, 20, and 30 hard red winter wheat kernels, Triticum aestivum L., were infested with different life stages of the rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae (L.), mixed with 35 g of wheat treated with 300 ppm of the Protect-It (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada) formulation of diatomaceous earth (DE), and held at 22, 27, and 32 degrees C. A similar test was conducted by exposing densities of 6, 1...

Chronological age-grading of three species of stored-product beetles by using near-infrared spectroscopy.

The accuracy of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) for predicting the chronological age of adults of the rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae (L.); the lesser grain borer, Rhyzopertha dominica (F.); and the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst), three pests of stored grain, was examined. NIRS-predicted age correlated well with actual age of these three species. Age predictions in S. oryzae by...

Determining Vitreous Subclasses of Hard Red Spring Wheat Using Visible/Near-Infrared Spectroscopy

Cereal Chem. 79(3):418–422 The percentage of dark hard vitreous (DHV) kernels in hard red spring wheat is an important grading factor that is associated with protein content, kernel hardness, milling properties, and baking quality. The current visual method of determining DHV and non-DHV (NDHV) wheat kernels is time-consuming, tedious, and subject to large errors. The objective of this research...

Effects of flameless catalytic infrared radiation on Sitophilus oryzae (L.) life stages

A laboratory benchtop flameless catalytic infrared emitter was evaluated against all life stages of the rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae (L.), an insect species associated with stored wheat. The emitted infrared radiation was in the 3e7 mm range. A non-contact infrared thermometer measured grain temperatures continuously during exposures of infested wheat. Insect mortality was a function of the f...
